I'm also no elitist when it comes to visual scripting and coding. I have a lot of fun with Construct, I do lots of prototyping and I deliver courses to kids using it. I might use C3 for exporting the final game, just for its runtime improvements. I'm put off C3 because of its in-browser restrictions, which is a shame because it has some nice new features. I was tempted to jump ship to Godot to get away from visual scripting, and I may well do that for my next project. I use C2 because I am very familiar with it, and because I like how quickly you can produce results with it.I don't have any secret process, I'm afraid, but I have been making pixel art as a hobby for a while. I draw the sprites straight into Graphics Gale (a program pretty similar to Aseprite). Some of the overworld backgrounds get pretty big (over 1000 pixels), but Construct can handle giant images without issue. Sprite sizes vary - overworld sprites are about 50 to 100 pixels tall, and the cat battle sprite is 216x290, for example. That's pretty much it - I just fudged the numbers until it all looked appealing. The camera movement is kept smooth with sin-based lerping. The sprites and back wall are positioned more-or-less with parallax. The floor uses R0j0hound's Mode 7 effect.Other aspects of RPGs - inventory management, battles, exploration - can all be implemented in the same manner as other engines. Alternatively, take a look at the Scirra store - I'm sure there are a few templates that do the hard work for you. I haven't been keeping up with C3 news, so it's possible some fancy new dialog system has been implemented that makes all this redundant. The conversation is displayed as needed by going down the array until a new flag is reached.Upon a conversation being triggered, the program searches for the right "flag" in the array. The file is stored, line by line, in an array.Upon entering a room, a dialog file is requested through AJAX.To give a very brief run-down of how the dialog system works in my game: You don't want to be writing thousands of words in the event editor. Why do you need external dialog files? Because hard-coding dialog in an RPG is silly, especially so for an engine with visual scripting like Construct. Specific to RPGs though, is that Construct doesn't hand-hold you about managing and parsing dialog files, so you'll need to implement your own system. Take a look at my twitter for screenshots and info.Ĭonstruct has some features that speed up the development process (the layout editor), and some things that risk slowing you down in the long-run (enormous event sheets).
